Toothpaste, soap and body wash, and deodorant, with every claim traced to whoever made it.
The Goodshelf Personal Care Desk covers oral care, soap and body wash, and deodorant. It reports ingredient lists and the source of each claim, and does not give medical advice.
The beat
Why this desk covers this
Personal care products sit close to health claims. "Clinically proven", "dermatologist recommended", and "aluminum-free" each mean something specific or nothing at all, depending on who says it. Shoppers deserve the ingredient list and the source of each claim, not a summary of the marketing.
Method
How we test
- Link the full ingredient list from the manufacturer's page or packaging.
- Attribute every efficacy claim to whoever made it: the brand, a regulator, or a published study.
- Show the active ingredient when a product is regulated as an over-the-counter drug in the US, as fluoride toothpaste and antiperspirant are.
- Refer questions about a skin or dental condition to a dermatologist, dentist, or pharmacist. The desk does not diagnose or recommend treatment.
These sit on top of the rules every test we run follows: How we test.
