About this product

Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is a true soap made by saponifying organic plant oils, not a synthetic detergent. It contains no synthetic preservatives, detergents, or foaming agents, and the formula is biodegradable.

Read the full description

The peppermint version uses peppermint and mint oils, which give a cooling tingle on skin. That tingle is the most common reason people pick it for showers after workouts and for summer, and the most common reason people with sensitive skin choose the unscented version instead.

Because the soap is concentrated, it is meant to be diluted. A few drops on a wet washcloth or in your hands is enough for skin. For cleaning, it mixes with water for dishes, floors, and general surfaces. Do not mix it with vinegar or lemon juice in the same solution: the acid and the soap neutralize each other and leave a greasy film.

Ingredients

Water, organic coconut oil, potassium hydroxide (used to turn the oils into soap, none remains in the finished product), organic palm kernel oil, organic olive oil, mentha arvensis, organic hemp oil, organic jojoba oil, peppermint oil, citric acid, tocopherol.

Questions before you buy

Do I need to dilute Dr. Bronner's castile soap?

Yes. It is concentrated, so a few drops on a wet washcloth or in wet hands is enough for skin, and for cleaning you mix a small amount into water. Using it straight from the bottle wastes soap and can feel drying.

Can I use the peppermint castile soap on my face?

Many people do, but peppermint oil creates a cooling tingle that can sting near the eyes. Keep it away from your eyes, use very little, and choose the unscented version if your skin is sensitive.

Can I mix castile soap with vinegar?

Not in the same solution. Vinegar is an acid and castile soap is alkaline, so they neutralize each other and leave a white, greasy film. Use them separately: clean with soap first, then rinse with diluted vinegar if you want.

Is this soap a detergent?

No. It is a true soap made by saponifying plant oils with potassium hydroxide. It contains no synthetic detergents, foaming agents, or preservatives.

Can I wash dishes with it?

Yes, diluted in water it works for hand-washing dishes. It is not designed for automatic dishwashers, which need low-sudsing dishwasher detergent.

Is it safe for septic systems?

The formula is biodegradable and contains no synthetic detergents, which is why it is a common choice for homes on septic systems and for camping. Use normal, diluted amounts.

Why does my hair feel waxy after washing with castile soap?

Soap is alkaline and can react with minerals in hard water, which leaves hair feeling coated. An acidic rinse, such as diluted apple cider vinegar or a citrus rinse, after washing usually fixes it.

How long does a 32 oz bottle last?

Because it is used diluted, a 32 fl oz bottle typically lasts much longer than the same size of ready-to-use body wash. Exact time depends on how many uses you put it to, such as body, dishes, and floors.
